The Wine Club Sunday: Cabernet From Around The Globe Blind Tasting - Guess the Region 2006/07/23

 Year  Wine  Price  Rating
2003 Chaleur Estate Cabernet, Washington
cassis, fragrant, cranberry, chalky, loamy, very tannic, very long finish. Thought it was Napa in the beginning. But the BV below is too obviously Napa, so changed this to Washington and was right. - so - ws
55.99 ****
2001 Kenwood Artist Cabernet, Sonoma County
raspberry, blackcurrant, herbs, very light, almost watery. Guessed right: Sonoma. Never had a Kenwood Artist Cabernet before. If the 2001 is this common... it's probably not worth trying. I have had better non-reserved Kenwood cabernets. - so - ws
45.99 **
2001 Elderton Ashmead Cabernet, Barossa Valley
violet, lavendar, blackberry, fruit punch. Clearly Australian. - so - ws
56.99 ***
2002 BV Georges de Latour Private Reserve, Napa Valley
Beautiful cassis, very fruity aroma, cedary oak, vanilla, chalky, long finish. What a beauty! Napa no doubt. - so - ws
74.99 *****
2002 Catena Alta Cabernet, Mendoza
dark plum, vanilla, loam, herbs, mineral, blood. Without much experience with Argentina and South African, thought it's Stellenbosch. Actually it's Mendoza, Argentina. - so - ws
30.99 ****
2002 Concha y Toro Don Melchor Cabernet, Chile
soil, stone, mineral, burned tar, some subtle fruit hiding underneath. Unbalancedly earthy. Some people might enjoy it. Knew it's Concha y Toro. - so - ws
33.99 ****
2003 Conde Cabernet, Stellenbosch
bell pepper, tobacco, blackberry, chalky, coarse tannin, acidic. Thought it's Argentina. Afterwards, I learned from the staff that bell pepper and herbal flavor are classic characteristics of South African cabernets. - so - ws
33.99 ***
2003 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac
coffee, earth, blackcurrant, acidic, tannic. Very well balanced. Knew it is a Bordeaux. One of the two best Lynch-Bages I've had. The other is 1999. - so - ws
62.99 ****½
2003 Casanova di Neri "Pietraonice", Sant'Antimo Rosso
extreme! This is very weird! extremely tannic, a hint of sulphur, chalky, blackberry, strangely unbalanced, astringent, like a whole mouth full of fine sand. Moth ball. Ugly wine but not bad! Subjectively I will never drink this again. But objectively borderline ****. Take one star out due to personal aversion. Guessed it's Italian by elimination only. - so - ws
73.99 ***
