K&L Saturday Tasting: Bordeaux with James Sichel from Chateau d'Angludet 2006/09/09

 Year  Wine  Price  Rating
2004 Lynch Bages Blanc, Pauillac
restrained nose, acidic, quite concentrated and smooth, lemon, fig, muscat, oak. 40% semillon, 40% sauvignon blanc, 20% muscadelle - so - ws
33.99 ****
2003 Nenin, Pomerol
raspberry, plum, chalky, fruity, a nice medium curranty finish - so - ws
36.99 ***½
2003 Alter Ego de Palmer, Margaux
dusty, blackberry, cherry, concentrated, very new world style. I think it can be passed as a mid to high end California Cab that's made in Bordeaux style (e.g., Spring Mountain). I like it. - so - ws
38.99 ****
2003 Clos du Marquis, St. Julien
mildly earthy, coffee, raspberry, full body, very complex, long finish. Not very opened yet. Should be a great wine. This is the 2nd wine of Las Cases of course and drinks like a lesser vintage of the first wine. - so - ws
39.99 ****½
2003 Beychevelle, St. Julien
earth, leather, dark fruit, tannic - so - ws
34.99 ****
2003 Leoville Barton, St. Julien
vanilla, cherry, raspberry, acidic, tannic, herbal licorice long finish. Really not much difference to the 2002 which was sold at only $45 or so. - so - ws
124.99 ****½
2003 Cos d'Estournel, St. Estephe
loamy, very very slight hint of barnyard (may be this particular bottle only as this is not a classic aroma of Cos), berries, chalky, simple, tannic finish. Still very good, but not impressive (WS 97?). Probably bottle variation. - so - ws
154.99 ****
1999 d'Angludet, Margaux
porcini, beef, currants, simple - so - ws
36.99 ***
2000 d'Angludet, Margaux
minty, currants, five spice, short finish - so - ws
39.99 ***
2005 d'Angludet, Margaux
I am grateful for Sichel to bring along a sample of 2005. This is the first 2005 Bordeaux I taste and could be the last given the terrible price spike. very fruit forward, grapy, cassis, raspberry, mint, astringent, sandalwood, long finish. very classy. No wonder the 2005 vintage is such a hype. Only lacking is tannin. - so - ws
n/a ****½
